The BT Global Challenge was the brain child of Sir Chay Blyth, who was the first person to sail around the world against the winds and currents (the wrong way). Sir Chay believed that people from all walks of life could achieve this feat with the right mindset and opportunity. Each team would be made up of crew volunteers, 70% of which had never sailed before with just one professional skipper to lead the team.
The Wrong Way - 33,000 miles against the prevailing winds and currents
One Design Yachts - Identical 72 feet yachts so no design advantage
Technology - Advances in satellite communications for weather routeing

Skipper Selection - Complex role balancing leadership, safety, sponsors and campaign
Do you know why you won?
"I think everyone onboard (and onshore) shared in our vision and our culture. We wanted to feel fulfilled. Winning became a habit and it felt good. In the end it was our greatest fulfillment"
