Against the Odds, Conrad Humphreys Official Story of the Vendee Globe

against the oddsOn the 20th of February 2005, Conrad Humphreys became only the 5th British sailor in history to complete the Vendee Globe race. He crossed the finish line after 104 days alone at sea in what has been acknowledged as one of the most remarkable comebacks of this legendary race. Humphreys set out from Les Sables D’Olonne, France in November 2004 with 19 competitors to race non-stop and without assistance around the world.

After 25 days at sea, Conrad was about to enter the cold desolate waters of the Southern Ocean when he hit a submerged object at speed. Flung across the cabin, the impact of the collision smashed one of his twin rudders and as he limped towards Cape Town to make repairs everyone thought that Conrad’s race was over.....everyone except Conrad and his team.

Inspiring Leadership, Staying Afloat in Turbulent Times

Inspiring leadershipCombining the latest thinking on human performance at the turn of the 21st century with findings from the BT Global Challenge 2000-1, Inspiring Leadership is a book that demonstrates how to inspire others, sustain high performance and create competitive advantage. Conrad Humphreys was just 26 when he was selected from over 180 skippers to lead a group of volunteers around the round. Conrad and his team dominated the race from start to finish, winning four out of seven legs of the race and a further two podium finishes. Conrad became the youngest winning skipper in the history of the race. He attributes this success to the winning attitude cultivated within the team, the driving philosophies being “winning is infectious” and “self-belief is everything.”
