Triple round-the-world yachtsman, entrepreneur and motivational speaker.
Conrad Humphreys is an inspirational team leader and world-class British yachtsman, as well as renowned personality in the south-west and on the international sailing scene. Conrad has built high performing teams as part of his sailing achievements. Skippering his team ‘LG Flatron’ to victory in the “World’s Toughest Yacht Yacht”, the BT Global Challenge, Conrad led a completely novice crew to achieve extraordinary results, winning four of the seven legs of the race. He has also skippered professional teams to the podium, winning Class 50 in The Transat Jacques Vabre, and third overall in the Volvo Extreme 40 circuit. In the Vendée Globe, known as the “Everest in sailing” he became only the fifth British sailor to complete the race. In this solo, non-stop circumnavigation Conrad’s story was inspirational – many thought his race was over when his yacht’s rudder was broken following a collision with a floating object in the water, however, Conrad’s single-minded determination and tenacity saw him make his way back up the fleet after making repairs at sea without assistance. His story has been described as one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of the event.
Having conquered many leadership challenges, Conrad’s motivational speeches and leadership workshops combine his experiences with thought-provoking lessons for the benefit of leaders and teams in the business arena. Conrad takes a lot of pride in his delivery and works with every client to tailor his speech. His is also very happy to spend time with his audiences responding to questions. His presentations are brought to life with fantastic onboard images and video footage and are focused around the following key themes:
1. Leadership – Creating a winning team
2. Teamwork – Building and sustaining team cohesiveness
3. Motivation – Maintaining momentum through the doldrums
4. Self-belief – Winning in turbulent times
As well as presenting on a stage in front of an audience, Conrad’s natural ease in front of the camera has found him providing commentary for the BBC, live interviews for Sky News, as well as live studio appearances for “Big Brother’s Little Brother” as a Leadership Expert. Conrad was approached by the celebrated high-end fashion designer, Carolina Herrera to be one of eight men to epitomise her new fragrance ‘CH for Men’. Conrad is also featured in a number of publications, including “Champions for Change – Athletes Making a World Difference” by the Global Sports Alliance; “Extreme Sail” foreword by Dame Ellen MacArthur; and “Sea Voices: Working toward a sea change” by Duffy and Elizabeth Healey. Conrad’s enthralling Vendée Globe Solo Round the World race is also documented in a DVD film “Against The Odds”.
Conrad is a director of Sport Environment, a creative sports marketing company he founded in 2001. His passion for the natural environment has taken him all over the world and in 2007 he founded the Blue® Climate and Oceans Project, a social enterprise which harnesses the popularity of adventure sports to encourage people to actively contribute to the health of our planet. This has culminated in an annual event called “The Blue Mile”, a nationwide mass-participation event designed to get people activity engaged with the water environment.
