Blue Short-listed for Global Sports Award

Beyond-Sport

The Blue Project is one of 3 nominated finalists for the best ‘Sport for the Environment’ category at this year’s Beyond Sport Awards. The winner will be announced in Cape Town during the Beyond Sports Summit on 8th December. We will be updating live from the awards via twitter @blueproject and here.

The Beyond Sport Summit is a unique event designed to celebrate, promote and drive forward sport-led social change. It uses a unique combination of networking opportunities, insightful panels, and action-led working sessions to collide those who use sport as a vehicle to create social impact, with influencers from the world of business, government and federations whose attitudes and decisions can have substantial impact.

“I’ve witness first-hand the power sport can have on communities and to see so many people in one room talking about how they can use this power for good was a humbling moment. Beyond Sport can achieve great things” – Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Patron of Beyond Sport, speaking after the inaugural Summit in London, 2009.

Confirmed speakers at the Beyond Sport Summit include:

  • Tony Blair, Former British Prime Minister
  • Michael Johnson, Olympic legend
  • Oscar Pistorius, South African Paralympic Sprinter
  • Lord Paddy Ashdown, President of Unicef UK
  • Lewis Pugh, Polar Swimmer and environmentalist
  • Lucas Radebe, South Africa’s most capped footballer
  • Vanessa Haywood, Actress and South African Film Star

Among the 1000 delegates attending the summit, are representatives from global organisations including Barclays Spaces for Sports, Green Sports Alliances, International Council of Sports Science and Physical Education, Liverpool Football Club, Sony Corporation, PwC, Unicef, Branson Centre of Entrepreneurs and many others.

The culmination of the Beyond Sport Summit will be an awards ceremony to announce the category winners of the Beyond Sports Awards 2011.  In the ‘Sport for the Environment’ category, Blue is up against “Chicago Youth Boxing Club: H2O for Mexico” and “NHL Green”.

This is an amazing opportunity for the Blue Project and to be short-listed is a great achievement in itself. Blue is looking forward to attending the Beyond Sport Summit and to the opportunity to showcase Blue at this high level, international sporting platform and network.
